Relaxed Bristol newborn photography sessions

I observe you and your family effortlessly being your everyday selves and I quietly click away to capture cuddles on the sofa, dancing in the kitchen and jumping on the bed. No posing, no awkward smiles, just you and your crew beautifully framed by the special place you call home.

But as every mama will know, having a new baby is quite the juggle! So, I want to make your newborn photography experience as simple and stress-free as possible. To help you prepare for your newborn photoshoot I have compiled my favourite tips to help you enjoy your session and make family portraits you will fall in love with time and again.

So, how should you prepare for your newborn photoshoot?

+ Hunt down the dreamiest natural light in your home. That could be the main bedroom, the nursery or even a nook in the kitchen. Follow that light and you will create beautifully lit images. During our getting-to-know-you call, I'll ask you to send me photos or video of your home to give me an idea of what rooms will work best for your session.

+ Create a playlist of your favourite chill-out songs to help set a calm and relaxed tone for your photoshoot. It might be your little one is soothed by white noise, in which case use that to help you all feel at ease. If you have older children throw in the odd nursery rhyme or Bluey theme tune to keep them sweet.

+ Tell older siblings your friend Debbie is coming over for a play date. Newborn photography sessions are just as much about older brothers and sisters as they are about your darling new addition. Make them feel special by allowing them to steal some of the limelight. I love to capture sibling photos with mum and dad as well as inviting them to love on their new baby. These moments make for wonderfully tender and heartfelt sibling photos. These are the photos that will have you bursting with joy!

+ Use your newborn photoshoot as an opportunity to remind yourself how beautiful you are. You have been on an incredible journey to get this far. And this is your permission slip to go ahead and treat yourself to a manicure, book that beauty treatment you so desperately need, take a long uninterrupted soak in the bathtub and enjoy the process of getting ready for your session.

+ Choose your outfit first. Then select clothes for your children and partner that will compliment the style and colours of your outfit. When you book with me I will send you my style guide and whilst I encourage families to be themselves, I understand a mother's body shape, confidence and comfort levels may change after giving birth. That's why I have lovingly curated a client wardrobe from which you can borrow dresses that have been purchased with femininity, comfort and breastfeeding in mind. The stunning dress in this newborn photoshoot is available to borrow from my client closet and I also have a few baby and toddler outfits, too!

+ Have a light declutter, clearing all the things you do not want to feature in your newborn photographs. Get the family to help tidy away large plastic toys, busy bedside tables and cluttered kitchen worktops. But please don't worry, I am here to lend a hand and I can move things around if I feel it is necessary.

+ Have water and snacks to hand. One of the perks of an in-home newborn photoshoot is you have easy access to the kitchen cupboards. My advice is to have a couple of snacks close by to minimise the chance of hunger-related kiddo meltdowns. It also means you, mama will have refreshments to hand should you need them, which is especially important if you're breastfeeding.

+ Let your family be themselves. Don't stress it! Let your kids be kids, be in the moment and know that some babies sleep through their newborn photoshoot while others are wide awake. Either way, it's absolutely okay. Whether your baby is sleepy or bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, you will walk away with a stunning keepsake gallery full of love, joy and connection, pressing pause on these precious early days, weeks and months.

When you book your newborn photoshoot with me I will send you my detailed prep guide, packed full of tips and tricks to help you get the most out of your session. In addition, I am always on hand to offer guidance and support to help make your newborn photography experience one to fondly remembe
